Sri Lanka part 1 Tuk Tuks and beach time

For a fistfull of rupees this guy will drive you anywhere in his tuk tuk

Well we just got back from Sri Lanka and it was such an incredible trip we may have to take a few posts to tell you about it. So we will start with the tuk tuks. Picture a typical 2 lane road- now place a man walking on the side of it, add another on a bicycle with his wife riding on the crossbars, add a family on a moped, add a tuk tuk (3 seats in the back- one driver), now a small car, a delivery truck, a big-ass bus... and this will give you an idea of the roads in Sri Lanka- where a 2 lane road is really an 8 lane assault on the senses! Now I'm sure there are accidents and fatalities here as well but in the 100k from the airport to Unawatuna we just flowed along in a stream of horn blasts (all friendly- just to let you know I'm here toots). I don't know if it's the Buddhism or not but everyone gets where they need to go. Now the 100k did take 5.5 hours to drive- but it was the first day of vacation so we didn't mind- plus we were sleeping for most of it. Our payoff was Unawatuna- an incredible place- the beach, the beer, but mostly the people- we met the kindest people here- (a quick note from the cynical part of my brain: I know we were in a tourist town and they weren't going to be mean to us- that's bad business- but there really wasn't an ulterior motive- they are just very nice.)
So our first few days were spent on the beach, having a beer ( or banana juice), and enjoying turning our brains to "off" mode.
Next post: we had real monkeys at our house- a post on the animals of Sri lanka

you can smile all you want- I'm not sharing.
